a cat returns home

you never knew
the way her skin glistens in the dark
how her heart matches the beat of yours
the storied ridges of her lips
and the melody of her quivering breath
when you first fell into her love.

you only knew
the symphonies she wrote to you
the warm chaos of her bursting soul
the words left unspoken
and the void in her quivering breath
when the ocean swallowed you whole.

when you finally began to sing yourself back into bloom
you plucked the weed from your soil
and wanted to grow a coffee plant.
you were gentle when you shook her foundations
and let time reforge cold steel into twisting ivy
and allowed yourself to begin anew.

that is when you knew
her skin, her heart, her lips, her breath,
her glow, her gale, her prickles, her roof,
her everything.
